Fashion on the Farm

Country family

Families living in Mecklenburg County dress more simply and less expensively than their city counterparts.
Forty percent of all Americans live on a farm in 1900. Children in rural areas usually have more chores than their city counterparts, and their clothing is more practical.
However, life is not all work and no play. Children enjoy outdoor games, explore the woods and swim in creeks on the family farms, fly homemade kites, play in haylofts, and fish. Baseball is another great summer pastime.
In the winter, children go ice skating or ride horse-driven snow sleighs. Playing travel board games and reading books stoke the fires of most children’s imaginations when the weather turns cold.
