Historians use the term Backcountry to define the Piedmont land of North Carolina. The rugged terrain and the lack of navigable rivers made transportation difficult in early North Carolina. The Piedmont was rural and underdeveloped. It’s economy will change over the years but in the beginning, farming is the main industry.
