Community Volunteers

During the 1940's, volunteers and grateful citizens from many organizations came together to gather and assemble information on the Mecklenburg Co. veterans who paid the supreme sacrifice during World War II. Through their combined efforts and those volunteers that followed, we are able to have such valuable records of their legacy.

Seated left to right are Neill Whitlock, chairman of the group, Mrs. J. H. Hursey, YMCA memorial records clerk, Dr. Herbert Spaugh, YMCA public relations committee, Lex Kluttz, co-chairman of the committee, J. Laurence Jones, Jr., co-chairman of the committee.
