Senator John F. Kennedy visited Charlotte during the 1960 Presidential Campaign. The photograph shows him passing into the center of town through the 1st block of West Trade Street. In the front seat of the car is the driver: County Police Chief, George Stephens and Governor Luther Hodges.
The Independence Building was located on the northwest corner of Trade and Tryon Street or what is commonly known as the Square. When it was completed in 1908, it was one of the tallest buildings in North Carolina.
