July 29, 1988 - Emory is elected Chairman of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission. Attorney Frank Emory becomes the first African American Chairman of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission.
AME Zion World Conference in Charlotte
August 1, 1988 - The World Conference of the AME Zion Church is held in Charlotte. The procession of bishops enters the Charlotte Convention Center as more than 4000 people from around the globe gather for the World Conference of the AME Zion Church.
January 7, 1864 - An explosion causes a terrible fire at the Confederate Navy Yard in Charlotte. No one can determine how it happened. The navy yard is destroyed.

February 1, 1763 - From the western section of Anson County, a piece of land is set aside to form a new county. It is called Mecklenburg County, in honor of King George III's wife. Her name is Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and the county is named for her homeland in Germany.

The veterans, men and women who fought in World War II, are returning home. To educate them, teacher Bonnie Cone pushes for new schools. Charlotte College is for whites, and holds classes at the old Central High School. Carver College is for blacks.
