When Girvaud Robers and her mother arrive at Piedmont Junior High, the students and their parents stare at them, but there is no violence.
West Charlotte High School opened in 1938 at 1415 Beatties Ford Road, where Northwest Junior High is now located. When it opened, 389 students were enrolled. Fourteen faculty members taught under the leadership of Principal Clinton L. Blake. The school housed grades 7-12.
On September 4, 1957, sixteen-year-old Gus Roberts arrives at Central High School with his father. Hundreds of students stand on the front steps, watching.
Principal Ed Sanders welcomes Gus and his father and makes sure the crowd behaves peacefully. Gus goes to class.

Beatties Ford Road – The River of Life
It is Sunday morning on Beatties Ford Road.
Many of Charlotte's African-American families have lived in the Beatties Ford Road area for decades.
Martin Luther King, Jr.'s voice filled the gymnasium on the Smith campus. His address was the highlight of the university's 1967 centennial celebration.
Friendship Baptist Church, on S. Brevard St. in Second Ward, was demolished as part of urban renewal. In October 1963, the congregration left the original site and held worship services at Northwest Junior High School. They raised the funds for the new church through tithes and offerings.
