In 1867, there were two photographers working in Charlotte. The number increased to twenty by 1930. Photography came into its own in the mid-nineteenth century throughout the United States.

Back in the day, everyone in the county celebrated on May 20th, the day the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was signed. We have been doing so since 1825. It is to honor the men who signed the declaration in 1775.
This is a list of jobs or occupations that men and some women had. All of these jobs are listed in the local city directory by occupation.

In her opening comments on June 11, 1989, Carla Dupuy, chairman of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners and a former chair of the library board, reflected she was proud of the new library – a Coliseum of the mind – referencing the new sports Coliseum that also opened in 1989.
Visitors to the Carolina Room often ask for help with researching their house, their street, or their neighborhood. They bring questions like, "Who lived where I do or nearby before I moved in?" "How old is my home?" "What kind of farm land was here before it was developed into residences?"
