In July, President Jimmy Carter arrives in Charlotte. He and his team of volunteers are determined. They plan to construct 14 houses in five days for Habitat for Humanity, an organization that builds affordable housing for low-income families around the world.
The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County is named Library of the Year by Library Journal. It notes children's programs, genealogical resources and computer technology among the resources the library provides to a growing population with changing needs.
March 20, 1996  -Controversy erupts in Charlotte. Tony Kushner's award-winning play called Angels in America opens for a 10-day run. Charlotte Repertory Theater stages the performance.

Naptime and the Biddleville School May Court in the 40s
Biddleville School was one of Charlotte’s all-black schools. It served the children of the Beatties Ford Road/Johnson C. Smith University area. In 1964, James Swann was assigned to Biddleville School.
Northwest Junior High in the early 1950s
Northwest Junior High was Charlotte’s first and only all-black junior high. Until it was started in 1954, grades 7-12 were considered high school. The school now occupies the old West Charlotte High School campus.

George Washington
May 28, 1791 - George Washington, who has promised to visit all of the states, arrives in Charlotte. People have lined up for hours to catch a glimpse of our nation's first president. Washington dines with Thomas Polk, and calls on prominent citizens.
Unknown Group of Soldiers
This photo of an unknown group of soldiers was possibly taken at Camp Grant, IL. Eugene Craft of North Carolina, studied music in Europe and was a WW I soldier at Camp Grant.
The North Carolina Medical College was chartered in 1892 at Davidson College. The upper graduates moved to Charlotte in 1903 with the opening of the Presbyterian Hospital. The entire medical college moved into this building Charlotte in 1907. Its address was 215 N.
This cannon was captured by the United States military in the West Indies in 1898 during the Spanish American War. It was manufactured on May 24, 1769. President William McKinley donated the cannon to Charlotte in 1900. It was placed in front of Post Office on West Trade Street.
