NationsBank Tower
October 24, 1992  - NationsBank Corporate Center opens. At 60 stories the skyscraper is the South's tallest building, costing $150 million. Located on the Square in the heart of Charlotte, it has been designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli.
King George III is still unhappy with the colonists and their desire for independence. On this day it is announced in New Bern that he has rejected a bill passed over two years previously that established a "seminary for learning" in Charlotte.
June 3, 1775 - Captain James Jack arrives in Philadelphia. He has traveled from Charlotte to inform the Second Continental Congress of the Mecklenburgers' proclamation of freedom. But he never presents the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence to Congress.
Polk asks citizens for support.
May 19, 1775 - Colonel Thomas Polk is leader of Mecklenburg's citizen army, called a militia. He has asked citizens to send representatives to meet at the Charlotte courthouse.

October 7, 1780 - On a long, low ridge to the west of Charlotte, frontiersmen from Georgia, Virginia, and both Carolinas are fighting a band of British militiamen led by Major Patrick Ferguson.
Finding Gold
Twelve-year-old Conrad Reed finds a large, glittery rock in a stream 25 miles northeast of Charlotte. His father, John, asks a silversmith to identify the 17-pound stone, but no one knows what it is. The Reed family uses the pretty rock for a doorstop.

Each building shown in the photos was built to hold 900 convalescing patients. They were part of 4 others built west of the already established hospital area. These two-story buildings contained sun porches and were connected by covered walkways. Each was estimated to cost $75,000. J. A.

The Central Hotel was one of the longest operating hotels in Charlotte (1849-1930s.) Originally known as the Mansion House, the name was changed in the 1870s. The owners of the hotel boasted of its large, elegant ballroom.
Textile Industrialist, Stuart Warren Cramer was born in 1868 in Thomasville, North Carolina. He designed a number of textile mills and villages in the Charlotte region, including the area now known as the North Davidson Historic District.

Senator William A. Graham (1804-1875) served in the US Senate from 1840-1843. He was the Governor of North Carolina from 1845-1849 and served as Secretary of Navy from 1850-1852.
Record implies this was James A. Jones first house on Pine Street. There is no evidence he ever resided here. It is possible the description is referring that this is the first house built by James A. Jones, the founder and president of J.A. Jones Construction.
The John B. Ross House is a wonderful example of Italian Revival architecture. Built between 1894 and 1896, it was at 502 North College Street, it was the home of the John B. Ross family. He was the president of the John B. Ross Company and vice-president of the First National Bank.
