The Horner Military School was first founded in Oxford, North Carolina in 1851, but moved to Charlotte in 1914. In Charlotte, the school was built on Roswell Avenue in Myers Park by Colonel Jerome C. Horner, son of the founder.

Henry Hayden, Sr. (1872-1934) was a contemporary of Baumgarten and Van Ness and was Charlotte’s first known black photographer. The son of David and Mary Hayden, he grew up in Charlotte and opened a studio in 1897 at 303 South Brevard Street.

When it was completed in 1897, the Louise Mill was the largest cotton textile mill in Charlotte. Like most mills of the period, the owners also built a village for its workers and families.
