Four Churches in Uptown area

St. Peter's Catholic Church is located at the corner of Tryon and First Streets.Tryon Street M.E. Church (South) was on the corner of Tryon and Sixth Streets. YMCA Building (Second One)

The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA)  was organized in Charlotte on November 11, 1874. This was the second building constructed by the organization. It was  located next door to the Latta Arcade in the 300 block of South Tryon Street.

Johnson C. Smith University

First known as Biddle University, Johnson C. Smith University was founded in 1870 on Beatties Ford Road. Colonel W.R. Myers donated the land. The school was named for its financial benefactor, Mary Biddle. On March 1, 1923, the school changed its name to Johnson C. Smith University in honor of another donor.
