Before the war, he worked as a cartoonist. He worked on a series of cartoons of army life at the front and planned to publish his book shortly after his interview for the newspaper in 3/1919. He received his award for extraordinary heroism in action in Mezy, France on 7/8/1918 by carrying a message of great importance during treacherous territory during daylight. He was wounded and almost buried by a shell explosion but was successful in his mission.He returned to the states after being wounded and gassed. He participated in the three largest battles and was wounded in two of them.
