Biographical Notes:
He died of injuries suffered when he was thrown from his mount during a polo match at Fort Sam Houston. He had competed with the US Army in the International Horse Show in London in 1911. Buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Often referred to as the most decorated man in the US Army. In the Spanish American War he served as a mounted orderly for Colonel Theodore Roosevelt. Wounded in battle at Lake Lanao, Philippines. During WWI he was Chief of Staff for the 82nd Division in France. From 1921-24 organized the Guardian Society in the Philippines to aid orphans fathered by US servicemen.Camp Carrabelle, Fl was renamed Gordon Johnston in 1943 and served as a training center for commando tactics in WWII.
