Smart joined the service from South Carolina. He was killed in action and was buried at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in Romagne, France, Plot G, Row 31, Grave 34. A memorial services was held at Chadwick-Hoskins Mill for the first son of Mecklenburg to give his life in the war. About 2000 people attended. His mother was given a silver service flag with a gold star by the Red Cross. Taps was played by buglers from the 13th Field Artillery at Camp Greene. The roll of servicemen from the Chadwick-Hoskins Mills contained 59 names.
