Biographical Notes: 
According to The Charlotte Observer on 9/23/1918, his mother, received word that her son had entirely recovered from poison gas and shell shock. After recovering in a hospital, he was transferred to a casualty depot. He was appointed to 'the staff of Col. Harry R. Lee, grandson of Gen. Robert E. Lee.' He died as a result of wounds from bomb fragments and exposure to poison gas received 5 years earlier in France. Caldwell had been stationed in France since 3/1918. His wife and baby's photo appeared in The Charlotte Observer on 11/15/1918. Name appears on the 2nd Presbyterian Church service flag, presented on 9-2-1918.
