James Carnes
Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: His mother died at age 46 in 1931. His father died at age 51 in 1934. The children were split up and raised by family and foster parents, but they remained close. While on a routine squadron duty which also afforded some men a chance to enjoy a Christmas leave, James B. Carnes was killed in a plane crash. Carnes had requested permission to make the flight. Mrs. Sarah Steele requested that his remains be buried in the American Military Cemetery in Carthage, Tunisia, the closest permanent cemetery to the place where he lost his life and that his burial flag not be sent home. His widow suffered a serious illness on 4/16/1945, and she had already lost her brother in the service to his country. She was living with her parents in Waxhaw, and they had her brothers burial flag. Carnes memorial marker is in North Africa. His memorial service was held on Sunday, 4/23/1944, at the Waxhaw Presbyterian Church.
