A Japanese suicide bomber dropped two 500-pound armor piercing bombs, which resulted in explosions, fires, and the loss of 832 men, including Joyner and his cousin, Robert Ephrian Abell, Jr.Memorial marker at Punchbowl National Cemetery in Honolulu, HI.
