Carolina Theater Women's Lounge

The lounge or sitting area designated for women was designed to create an atmosphere of both comfort and elegance. The Carolina Theatre opened in 1927 on the corner of North Tryon and Sixth Streets. With a seating capacity of 1,800 and beautiful architectural and decorative features, it remained popular entertaintment venue for many years. Today part of the theatre still stands and efforts are underway to restore the structure to its initial glory.

Ratcliffe Florist (1940)

The Ratcliffe Florist at 431 South Tryon Street began operations in 1929 when Louis Ratcliffe started the business.  This wonderful example of Mediterranean Revival style was designed by William H. Peeps (1868-1950). Physical Description: negatives only Publisher:

Red Fez Country Club

Local Shriners organized The Red Fez Club in 1915 and opened a three-story country club on Lake Wylie. (Catawba is the name of the River that feeds the lake.) For more information about the Red Fez Club: http://www.redfezshrineclub.com/ClubHistory

Osborne Oak

The Osborne Oak was located at West Trade and Graham Street. It was more than a 100 years old when this photograph was taken. The home belonged to Dr. Sam Hayes who married an Osborne.

Zebulon B. Vance's Charlotte Residence

The Charlotte residence of Zebulon B. Vance (1830-1894) at Sixth and College Streets. Born in Buncombe County, Vance served twice as Governor of North Carolina. After the Civil War he moved to Charlotte and established a law practice. Later Vance was served as one North Carolina's   a United States Senator.
