Barringer Hotel

The Barringer Hotel opened its doors on December 15, 1940. Located at 425 North Tryon Street, it was built by Lawrence S. Barringer and his sister, Floral Barringer. The hotel was named for their father, William Rufus Barringer, who was a former owner of a string of elegant hotels in the south. The Barringer during its heydays was one of the finest establishments in the city. Elizabeth College

Elizabeth College for women was founded in 1897 at what is now the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and Hawthorne Lane. The main building was 172 by 143 feet, four stories high and constructed of brick and Indiana limestone. At the time this postcard was made there were thirty instructors and about 130 students. The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was once located next door to the Latta Arcade in the 300 block of South Tryon Street. It was the second YMCA building in the city that opened in 1906. A trolley is on the left.

Charlotte Motor Inn

The Charlotte Motor Inn was located at 3815 North Tryon Street on US Business 29. It featured 212 rooms, a restaurant, two swimming pools, a banquet hall and a meeting room. Physical Description: 3x5 Publisher: Curteichcolor

YMCA (First Building)

This was one of the first Y.M.C.A. buildings in Charlotte. Built between 1887 and 1888, this brown stone building cost $40,000. It was located between Third and Fourth Streets on South Tryon Street. In 1905, the building was sold to the American Trust Company. (The 1906 date is based on the postmark.)
