Freeman Plyler

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He went overseas in January, 1944.He was wounded in action over Old Buckingham, England on 2-6-1944 and died the next day. Burial was at the Cambridge American Military Cemetery, Cambridge, England, Grave 15, Row 7, Plot A. Memorial service at Big Spring Methodist Church in Sep 1944.

Richard Peoples

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: One of four men who were killed when their medium bomber crashed at the field during a combat training flight. Memorial service at Sardis ARP Church on Jan 2, 1945, and at Dover Airfield on Jan 7, 1945. Burial in the church cemetery. The Miller-Peoples Bible Class is named for church members Richard Preston Peoples and Julian Miller, Jr., who both died in service in WWII. Preston Lane in Charlotte is named for Preston Peoples.

Sam Plyler

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Paratrooper killed in action in Europe, possibly with the invasion forces. A military memorial service was held at Bathabra Baptist Church at Cross Hill, SC on Jul 23, 1944.

James Quarles, Jr.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Quarles became ill in England, was taken to Walter Reed Hospital, and then to Charlotte. He died after a 10 month battle with cancer. He is buried in Chapel Hill Cemetery. His wife was also a UNC student.

James Perry

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: A B17 bomber from Clovis Army Airbase was on a combat training flight and crashed about 30 miles from Colorado Springs. It was not found until May 21st. Because the bodies could not be identified, they were all buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. Mr. Perry attended these services.

Lloyd Poovey
