Jonas Gives Mecklenburg Added Fame
Facts concerning the Mecklenburg Declaration and details of yesterday’s celebration revolving around the President’s visit appeared in Monday’s Congressional Record.
The remarks were addressed to Congress by Rep. Charles R. Jonas.
The remarks included the entire text of the declaration and names of the signers.
The article also reproduced a portion of Washington Irving’s biography of Washington which related to the signing of the declaration here.
And Rep. Jonas said, “No one in North Carolina claims we have a monopoly on patriotism…but we are entitled to take some natural pride in the fact that our forefathers were the first Americans to undertake to dissolve the bands that bound them to the mother country.”
