1969-Quiet Observance of "Meck Dec" Day

‘Our Day To Be Quiet’  

Mecklenburg Independence Day will be observed here with reserve and simplicity tomorrow.  

On the heels of the county’s year-long Bicentennial Celebration, the mood is subdued, and even the Daughters of the American Revolution are passing up an official observance of “Meck Dec” Day.  

The Mecklenburg Historical Association will hold a “simple and brief” service in front of the county courthouse at 9:30 a.m., and at 7 p.m. The association members will have a dinner at “Big” Steele Creek Presbyterian Church. The dinner speaker will be Dr. Chalmers Davidson of Davidson College. J. Rudolph Thompson is president of the association.  

County Government offices will be closed for the day, and the courts will be closed. The city government offices will remain open. Schools and ABC stores will be open as usual.  

The DAR Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Day Tea, traditionally held at the Hezekiah Alexander House, will not be given this year since the house is closed for further restoration.  

One of the leaders in the movement to restore the home, Mrs. Hugh B. Houser, will speak at a meeting of the Charlotte Eastern Kiwanis Club. Her topic will be “A Documentary on the Life of Hezekiah Alexander.” The meeting will be at 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on E. Independence Blvd.
