Regional Libraries
The Library of the Future, 1989-1999: Regional Libraries
In Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, the 1990s saw the introduction of “regional” libraries: large branches that could serve a wide area. The system grew from the neighborhoods surrounding the urban core of Charlotte to the new suburbs on the county’s fringe, thus showing its determination to stay relevant as development spread out. On the west side, it kept up with need more than with numbers, thus living up to its historic mission to be “an influence for good.”
