'A Mecklenburg native, Julian was the first American soldier to carry the American flag in combat in France in WWI, for which he was awarded the Croix de Guerre, France's highest military honor. He had joined the Army at age 16. When he completed his Army tour in WWI, he joined the Marines. He also was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and several other citations and awards. Julian was gassed during the war and was considered a disabled veteran.' He was buried at Cooks Memorial Presbyterian Cemetery with full military honors.
