1963 - Separate campuses are built for UNC Charlotte and Carver College.
- Charlotte College becomes a four-year institution and part of the University of North Carolina system. By law, UNC-Charlotte is now desegregated.
- However, the new campus is built in the northeast part of the county, far removed from black neighborhoods.
- At the same time, the state builds a new campus for Carver College in a black neighborhood.
- Kelly Alexander of the NAACP argues that the government should integrate UNC-Charlotte rather than build separate colleges.
