- Part of a project to recapture Charlotte's black history, the first volume of this book covers the 1800s to the 1950s in photographs.
- Elizabeth Randolph, retired educator and former Chairman of the Library Board of Trustees, edits the book.
- Negatives were made from thousands of pictures brought in by the black community and are now part of the library's archives. Vermelle Ely will head the board for the second volume.
