His Army serial number was 1,409,705, and he enlisted at Ft. Screven, GA., giving his address as Lake City, SC. He gave his brother, J. W. Thornhill, as his emergency contact. He was 22 years and 6 months old at the time. He was dishonorably discharged on 6/13/1918. He was buried on 8/21/1921at Elmwood Cemetery at age 27. The War Mothers and the American Legion Auxiliary placed a permanent marker at his grave on 11/1928 because the government declined due to his discharge status.He may not have been at Camp Greene or ever lived in Charlotte, but he is included in this web exhibit due to his brother's residency in Charlotte and his burial in the 'Soldier's Lot' in a Charlotte cemetery.
