His name appears on the city draft roll. These draft cards have not survived. He was white and 24 years old.He was reportedly in declining health after he came back from serving overseas. He died of pneumonia in a Charlotte hospital. His brother and father died prior to him.Dr. Luther Little of First Baptist Church performed his funeral at the Hovis Funeral Chapel. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.The active pallbearers at his funeral were E. M. Wilkinson, Cornell Clanton, David Henderson, Ben Ashcraft, Harry Marsh and James Huntley. Honorary pallbearers were H. M. Victor, Dr. John Q. Myers, Dr. T. W. Baker, D. F. Henderson, H. G. Ashcraft, Dr. C. C. Massey, C. M. Kiser, Vance Howard, L. L. Hackney, B. C. Edwards, Baxter Williams and H. F. Diehl.
