Churches [1]
Sugar or Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church [2] is one of the oldest churches in Mecklenburg County. It was founded in 1755. (This building was built in 1870.)
Charlotte has always been known known as the city of churches. There are and were hundreds throughout the county. In the early 1900s, everyone dressed up in their best clothes to go to church on Sunday or to the Synagogue on Saturday. The church was one of the centers of activities for many families living in Charlotte over a hundred years ago. Parents and children attended Sunday school and then attended services. Afterwards, most families ate a big dinner with grandparents, aunts, uncles and many cousins. All businesses were closed on Sunday, including the movies, stores, pharmacies or restaurants. Everything was quiet on Sundays.
