The postcard is misleading as there is no Lake Catawba in Mecklenburg County. It is in fact a portion of the Catawba River.
G.W. MacKinnon owned and operated the Carolina China Market which was located on Highway 29 in Charlotte. It offerred the largest selection of fine china, crystal, pottery and other novelty items. The store carried 200 patterns of earthenware and china.
At the turn-of-the-century, very few women work outside the home. The traditional jobs for professional women are teaching, nursing, and secretarial work. The majority of working class women in Charlotte work in a laundry or in textile mills.
In the early 1900s, there were twenty labor unions in Charlotte. One hundred years later there are only twelve unions.

The Scots Irish settlers established Presbyterian churches throughout the counties in the 1700s. At the turn-of-the-century, there were two Presbyterian churches in Charlotte in uptown Charlotte.
Sugar or Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church is one of the oldest churches in Mecklenburg County. It was founded in 1755. (This building was built in 1870.)
Although there are very fine institutions of learning for young women throughout the state, most of the private schools are not designed to prepare young women for a profession other than teaching or nursing.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He entered the service in the USNR and died aboard the U.S.S. Franklin, when the carrier was hit by a Japanese suicide bomber. His burial was at sea with full honors. A memorial service was held at the Myers Park Methodist Church on 4-16-1945.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He was the command pilot of a B-29 and had 200 hours of combat service at the time of his death. He had completed a mission to Singapore and was returning to his base when his plane was reported missing after encountering 20 Japanese planes.
