 The 1952 Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Day was celebrated along with the dedication of a new veterans’ clubhouse in Charlotte, North Carolina.

1948-Shout Freedom! performance

1948: Shout Freedom!

Shout Freedom!, by Legette Blythe, used one of the largest outdoor sets in state history.  It ran for two weeks at the Southern States Fairground. Thousands of people attended each performance. The full text of the play is available in the Historic Documents section of this exhibit.

Will Observe Independence Day----City Schools, Federal Building and All Other Business Establishments Will Continue as Usual.  

Charlotte will celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence by the closing of banks, the city hall, and the courthouse.
