William Knox, Jr.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: The War Dept. received notification of his death through the Red Cross, who had been contacted by the German government. His memorial service was held at the West Avenue Presbyterian Church on July 16, 1944, by his former pastor, Dr. W. W. Akers of Gastonia. His B-17 or Flying Fortress, where he served as navigator, was probably lost during attack on Brunswick, Germany, an aircraft parts manufacturing town. A memorial marker in his honor is in Ardennes, France.

Robert Jenkins

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He grew up in Charlotte and graduated from Central High School. Air Medal for meritorius achievement in sorties over Africa. Missing in action in the Mediterranean theater. Memorial marker in North Africa. Memorial service at Westminster Presbyterian Church in May 28, 1944 and on Jul 21,1946. In 2000, workers dredging Lake Tunis found his plane with the remains of five crew members. He was identified through his sister's DNA. Services with full military honors will be held June 8, 2003 at Bethel Presbyterian Church near Clover, SC.

Howard Kelly, III

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He was returning from his fifth mission over enemy-held territory, when his plane crashed in the mountains. He was buried in the military cemetery in Asheville, NC.
