Edward Skillet Holt, Jr.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Commander of submarine USS Bullhead in Lombok Strait, Java Sea that failed to return on schedule. Said to have been the youngest submarine Commander in the Navy. Made 11 war patrols on submarines. Memorial service at Norfolk NAS on Oct 27, 1946 and flowers strewn at sea. Memorial service at Myers Park Baptist Church Sept 15, 1946. Memorial marker at Ft. McKinley, Manila, PI.

Gilmer Holton, Jr.

Joe Hughes

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He was killed in action. He was the first man of the 117 city employees in the armed services to be killed. A portrait of Joe Hughes, sketched by Carl Holliman, the identification officer of the Charlotte Police Dept., was given to the new American Legion Post in Charlotte, named in his honor, on 4-4-1946. A smaller portrait also done by Mr. Holliman was presented to Mrs. Hughes. Flags were flown at half staff in honor of Howard Hughes in Charlotte on 4-4-1946.A memorial service was held at Parkwood A.R.P. church on 5-7-1944.

Richard Henning

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Killed in a plane crash in India. He had completed more than 550 hours of combat flying and 65 missions over enemy territory. Reportedly the youngest pilot to be a Liberator squadron commander. Record for the longest round-trip flight ever made by a B-24 - 3250 Statute miles.

Guy Hoole

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He had been overseas since he landed in North Ireland in December, 1943. Killed in action in Germany. Memorial mass on Jan. 28, 1945, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Dilworth Rd. Carillon bells were installed at St. Patrick's as a memorial on 9-30-45. Memorial marker at Henri-Chapelle, Belgium.
