Luther Mac Lawrence

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: While crossing the English channel his ship was hit. Last seen going below deck to helped trapped and injured men escape. Buried at Normandy, France and a memorial marker placed.

Guy Hoole

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He had been overseas since he landed in North Ireland in December, 1943. Killed in action in Germany. Memorial mass on Jan. 28, 1945, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Dilworth Rd. Carillon bells were installed at St. Patrick's as a memorial on 9-30-45. Memorial marker at Henri-Chapelle, Belgium.

William Hunnicutt

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: His death was the first reported of any Mecklenburg County man. He died from a heart attack while at sea, after serving in the Navy for many years. His funeral was at Pritchard Memorial Church, and his burial was in the family plot at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in Matthews, NC, just a few miles from where he was born. The Legionnaires, veterans of WW I, attended his funeral and draped his coffin with a flag. The local State Guard served as the firing squad, then the bugler sounded taps.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Killed in the offensive at Anzio Beachhead.

Godfrey Hunter, Jr.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Killed in action at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Listed on the 1946 YMCA Honor Roll for Mecklenburg County.

Gilder Horne, Jr.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: His tank had been hit twice and was on fire. He ordered his comrades to evacuate, but he stayed behind to operate the guns to cover their escape. He was originally listed as missing in action but never returned to the hero's welcome he deserved. On May 14, 1943, a citation from General Eisenhower and the Distinguished Service Cross were presented to his father at Central High School. There were local and military dignitaries, representatives from V.M.I, the entire Central High student body as well as a band in attendance for the ceremony.

James Hunter, Jr.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Accidentally killed in the North Pacific in August, 1943. Burial overseas. Memorial service at Tabernacle ARP Church on May 26, 1946. His mother honored as a Gold Star Mother on Nov 12, 1943.

Richard Henning

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Killed in a plane crash in India. He had completed more than 550 hours of combat flying and 65 missions over enemy territory. Reportedly the youngest pilot to be a Liberator squadron commander. Record for the longest round-trip flight ever made by a B-24 - 3250 Statute miles.

Lewis Horton

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Killed in action in France while securing a road junction. He had been stationed at Schofield Barracks on Oahu when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Injured in a plane crash on Feb 28, and died of his wounds 3 days later. Services in Atlanta.
