Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He had been overseas since he landed in North Ireland in December, 1943. Killed in action in Germany. Memorial mass on Jan. 28, 1945, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Dilworth Rd. Carillon bells were installed at St. Patrick's as a memorial on 9-30-45. Memorial marker at Henri-Chapelle, Belgium.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: His death was the first reported of any Mecklenburg County man. He died from a heart attack while at sea, after serving in the Navy for many years. His funeral was at Pritchard Memorial Church, and his burial was in the family plot at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in Matthews, NC, just a few miles from where he was born. The Legionnaires, veterans of WW I, attended his funeral and draped his coffin with a flag. The local State Guard served as the firing squad, then the bugler sounded taps.

Reportedly the youngest pilot to be a Liberator squadron commander. Record for the longest round-trip flight ever made by a B-24 - 3250 Statute miles.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: His tank had been hit twice and was on fire. He ordered his comrades to evacuate, but he stayed behind to operate the guns to cover their escape. He was originally listed as missing in action but never returned to the hero's welcome he deserved. On May 14, 1943, a citation from General Eisenhower and the Distinguished Service Cross were presented to his father at Central High School. There were local and military dignitaries, representatives from V.M.I, the entire Central High student body as well as a band in attendance for the ceremony.
